What is the difference between mobile and smartphone?
Let's try to clarify and understand what characterizes a smartphone compared to a mobile phone and why choose one rather than the other.
Let's start with what they have in common: both are portable phones, which use radio signals to transmit voice and data from one device to another.
Precisely in the different types of data transmitted we find one of the differences between mobile phones and smartphones.
But what are the other aspects that characterize the two types and how have they evolved over time?
The very first mobile phone model was developed in Motorola's labs in the early 1970s.
However, it was only in the 1980s that the production of the first models in series began, with a still very high cost and limited diffusion.
Thanks to technological innovation and the lowering of the cost of production since the mid-90s, the mobile phone ceases to be a status symbol and spreads among large sections of the population, eventually replacing the use of line telephones in many cases. fixed. Smartphones are the evolution of mobile phones, the first models appear at the end of the 90s.
The mobile phone The mobile phone is basic and less complex than the smartphone, both in terms of use and functionality. Basically it allows you to make calls and send SMS messages.
Most of them allow you to record and view photos and movies.
The most advanced devices provide the ability to surf the internet and send e-mails.
Normally the mobile phone is smaller and lighter than the latest generation smartphones.
This makes it pocket-sized, thanks to the materials with which it is made (plastic and metal) it is resistant to shocks and falls, therefore less delicate than its more technological "cousins".
Types of mobile phones There are different types of mobile phones, over the years manufacturers have experimented with the most original and curious forms, in a race to differentiate themselves from the competition.
These are the main types available: classic mobile phone, that is the more traditional form, with the screen positioned above the keyboard always visible; mobile phone with flap, in which the screen is always visible while the keyboard is protected by a flap that can be opened, to prevent the keys from being accidentally pressed; clamshell phone, with the phone divided into two parts, one for the screen and one for the keyboard, joined by a hinge that allows you to close them one over the other.
Mobile Phone Screen and Keypad Most mobile phones have a keypad separate from the screen.
The keyboard can be compact (shows the letters of the alphabet distributed in the numeric keypad) or extended (like that of a computer to be clear). The keys often have high legibility, with a numeric keypad large enough to be used for easy typing.
Many keyboards also reserve space for keys that refer to particular functions, such as the quick callback or the SOS key.
The screen or display can be monochrome, with large characters shown on the display and simple to read or in color, to view photos and videos.
Mobile Phone Features While not as developed as the latest smartphone models, even traditional mobile phones have a limited range of built-in features that make them useful for more than just calling or texting.
Here are the most common ones: Phonebook The phonebook allows you to create contacts and record telephone numbers.
In this way it is possible to know from whom the incoming call is coming and it is easy, especially for older people, to automatically call the desired number.
The phonebook can be stored directly on the SIM card or saved in the mobile phone itself.
Camera Almost all color screen mobile phones are now equipped with a camera. The definition rarely exceeds the VGA format (0.3 Megapixel).
Usually the quality of the photographs taken with these devices is not comparable to that of smartphones, but it can still be satisfactory for those who have no particular needs.
FM radio For the nostalgic of the old radios, almost all mobile phones are produced with a real built-in FM transceiver.
In many smartphones this function is not present as standard but must be simulated with specific applications. Battery life of the phone As we have seen, since these are models with much more limited functions than smartphones, the batteries have a lower capacity but at the same time can guarantee greater autonomy. Battery life is the time between one charge and the next. It varies according to the type of action performed with the device.
For mobile phones, the conversation normally goes from two to eight hours, while in stand-by the duration can be up to a few days.
How much does a mobile phone cost Basic mobile phones have an average cost ranging from 30 to 80 Euros, but for more particular models it can even cost up to 150 Euros.
This is certainly a much lower cost than low-end smartphones. Who is a mobile phone suitable for? As a consequence of what has been said so far, it is easy to outline the target audience to which mobile phone manufacturers turn.
Certainly the less technological people; perhaps with reduced mobility who therefore prefer to press keys instead of the screen; visually impaired so they need to be able to read the numbers on the screen well. Characteristics common to many elderly people, who revisit the more familiar form and functions of the old handset telephones in mobile phones. For them, there are senior phones with larger keys, higher volume ringtones and high contrast screens. Another group are those who are looking for a shock-resistant, long-lasting and long-lasting product that performs work in dangerous conditions and does not require advanced functionality.
Smartphone After reviewing the characteristics of mobile phones, let's now see what smartphones are, the most advanced mobile phones.
What does Smartphone mean? Let's start by explaining the meaning of the term.
Smartphone is a term in English that literally means “smart phone” (smart = smart and phone = telephone).
So smartphones are “smarter” mobile phones, that is, equipped with greater computing capabilities and more advanced connections.
This makes them similar to small pocket computers.
But the characteristics that differentiate them from mobile phones are many others, both in terms of appearance and for what lies under the shell.
Touchscreen "Touchscreen" The first generation of smartphones to have established itself on an international scale were the BlackBerry.
Unlike all contemporary smartphones, they were not equipped with a touch screen but a keyboard, like traditional cell phones.
Between 2006 and 2007, the first smartphones with a capacitive touch screen, i.e. sensitive to the touch of the fingers, were released.
Among these, certainly the iPhone (presented in 2007) was the one that gave the greatest boost to the spread of “smart” devices even among the general public.
The touch screen, or touchscreen, has therefore become a peculiar feature of smartphones, which differentiates them from mobile phones.
To enter a number or write a text it is no longer necessary to press physical keys placed on a keyboard, but just press with your finger in a specific point on the screen. There are currently two different screen technologies on the market: AMOLED and IPS. AMOLED to work needs an electrical impulse that allows you to turn on all the various dots that make up the display; IPS LCD is based on the ability of liquid crystals to reproduce any type of color when exposed to a heat source.
The screen size and resolution are among the main aspects that differentiate and characterize the different smartphone models. They typically range from a minimum of 4.5 inches up to a maximum of 5.7 inches. The resolution ranges from a minimum of 1280 x 720 pixels up to a maximum of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The screen size and resolution are an important factor in the price of the device.
Smartphone functions After having seen how to recognize a smartphone from a mobile phone (nowadays all smartphones are equipped with a touch screen and do not have the keyboard, present in mobile phones), let's move on to analyze what is not seen at first glance, or what is possible to do with a smartphone (which a mobile phone does not do!). What does it mean operating system? By operating system we mean the program that manages all the actions that the smartphone, as a computer, must perform.
Currently the two main mobile operating systems are iOS (for iPhone and iPad) and Android ™ (for many device brands). The presence of an advanced operating system determines the main difference between smartphone and mobile phone. In fact, with the increase in computing capacity, the potential of the device also increases.
Mobile applications Mobile operating systems have the great advantage of allowing the installation of specially developed applications.
Applications, or apps, are programs that can be installed on your smartphone. The Apps allow you to exponentially expand the possibilities of smartphones, responding to the most disparate needs.
There are apps to play games, pass the time, access social networks, perform advanced calculations, take advantage of the physical sensors present in the device to calculate geolocation, etc.
The limit is the developers' imagination.
Through a store system where apps are published, anyone who is able to program can create and distribute their own customized application. In this way, everyone can customize their smartphone by installing the apps that are most useful to them.
Some apps are paid while most are free.
Memory Installing applications and running the operating system requires a lot of memory.
Therefore the memory capacity of smartphones (even of the lower-end ones) is still greater than that of a classic mobile phone. In addition, for some models it is possible to expand it using an SD card, which is a very small card that physically increases the memory.
The latest micro SD cards on the market can go up to 128GB.
Multimedia: photos, videos and music With a larger memory capacity and more performing processors, smartphones have also incorporated the functions of the old MP3 players and Walkman, integrating them with the ability to record and play high resolution videos.
Smartphones are now advanced multimedia players for creating and reproducing multimedia content and have allowed the birth of successful apps such as Instagram.
Internet connection Although even the most advanced mobile phone models have a UMTS internet connection, navigation is mostly inconvenient. In this, smartphones have a clear advantage, because they are designed for browsing with Wi-Fi or fast data connection.
Even if it is possible to use a smartphone only for making calls and sending SMS, for several years all the main telephone companies have offered plans that include data traffic at competitive prices.
In order to fully exploit all the potential of these devices and apps, we can say that an internet connection is required. Geolocation GPS, gyroscope, accelerometer Almost all smartphones are equipped with sensors that allow to detect the position of the device, the speed in which it moves, the orientation and other derived properties.
Specifically, GPS sensors combined with specific apps (such as Maps or Google Maps) have made satellite navigators obsolete. By now the GPS geolocation functions are integrated in a transversal way in almost all the apps of daily use.
How much does a smartphone cost? There is a wide range of offers, brands and models of smartphones on the market. Depending on the characteristics of the device, prices can vary from 100 Euros up to a maximum of 1,300 Euros.
Such high prices are usually reserved for the "note" line, whose performance is comparable to that of a laptop.
For whom smartphones are suitable We have seen how smartphones can be considered to all intents and purposes as small pocket computers.
They allow us to connect to the internet, send emails, chat with friends and work. Precisely for this reason and thanks to the infinite offer of App in the stores, smartphones are now an almost essential accessory in everyday life.
There are now smartphones made specifically for any need: smartphones for children, which work under the supervision of an adult; as well as “rugged” smartphones that withstand extreme environmental conditions. For this reason, it is not possible to define a single type of user, because by now it is a generalist product intended for all people who have a minimum of confidence with technology.
