Dryers are pretty energy-hungry appliances. So whenever possible, dry your clothes outside in the sun or on a hanger indoors (although don't use an electric heater to try drying your clothes faster). These methods are not only more energy efficient - without using electricity - they are also free. If you need to use a dryer, there are a few techniques you can use to reduce energy consumption. First of all, always use the spin cycle on the washing machine at the end of the wash cycle. This means that you can run your tumble dryer - the least efficient appliance - for a shorter time. Do not overload the dryer, as this means you need to run it longer and try to string together similar weight items and fabrics for maximum efficiency. Consider running the machine on a medium setting rather than a high setting, keep it in good condition, for example by emptying the lint filter regularly, so that it runs at optimum performance.
